Album: "Suddenly," Caribou

The lyrics to the first track on Suddenly, Caribou's latest album, are just this:

Sister, I promise you I'm changing
You've heart broken promises, I know
If you want to change it, you must break it
Rip it up and something new will grow

Brother you're the one that must make changes
No one else can do it if you don't
Surely, you'll have noticed things are changing
I can't do it all on my own

They repeat, as though Dan Snaith — in his beautifully androgynous voice — is having an argument with himself. I'm both of them: I've been inside, doing my best not to spread the coronavirus, making radical changes of my own. And I can't do it alone; I think my mind would be gone if I didn't have people virtually present here with me.

The rest of the album is similarly great. I love "New Jade" and its hopefulness ("Don't you believe what he says / It's always lies anyways / We've been waiting for so long / And now he's finally gone"); I love "Home," because it distills the feeling of being in a safe place that's your own, somewhere you've put time and care into.

Anyway, Suddenly is fun and downbeat dance-y. It's the perfect thing to listen to while you're staring out your window, thinking about what you'd rather be doing on this otherwise sunny day.
